Lawyers Aren’t Boring
Background
Salenger, Sack, Kimmel, and Bavaro, LLP is a New York Medical Malpractice & Personal Injury law firm. They are also trial attorneys – meaning they are one of the few law firms on Long Island that try their case in front of a jury. Personal Injury law firms are often known for their cheesy commercials and as “ambulance chasers.”
The managing partners tasked me with the job of promoting the law firm without promoting the cases they have won. They wanted to prove to the public that they are people who care for their clients. Additionally, since they were trying cases in front of a jury, it was important for the Firm to maintain a good image for members of the jury.

The Opportunity
When I was hired, I didn’t have a legal background and didn’t know much of the legal terms. Many of the lawyers were professors at Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University. I was learning most of the legal terminology through PowerPoints the lawyers had created for their students. Most of the legal terms were in Latin and that’s when my “a-ha” moment kicked in.
The Concept
Most legal terms are in Latin and while reading the legal terms most of them sounded like Harry Potter spells (Impervius) sounded like intra vires. The lawyers, who were also professors, were teaching the material so I thought it would be fun to mesh the two concepts together. I would take a legal term, ask if it was a Harry Potter spell, and then educate the viewer on what the legal term meant.
